What is occupational therapy?

Occupational therapy is a health and rehabilitation profession. Occupational therapists work with people of all ages who need specialized assistance to lead independent, productive, and satisfying lives due to physical, developmental, social, or emotional problems. Occupational therapists use the "occupations" of self-care, work, and play/leisure activities to increase independence, enhance development, and/or prevent disability. To achieve these goals occupational therapists may also adapt the task or the environment.  Occupational therapists address environmental factors, such as bathroom safety and kitchen access.

ex: After a fall resulting in a hip fracture, a patient returning home may have difficulty getting in and out of the tub, getting in and out of bed, making meals and getting dressed independently. An Occupational Therapist can rehabilitate function, make suggestions for tub seats/benches and grab bars to assist with transfers, and address safety  awareness and falls prevention in the home to prevent another fall.

An Occupational Therapist can guide a person in finding the confidence and provide the tools to return to an independent life.

What is the John Barnes Myofascial Release Technique (MFR)?

Myofascial Release is a  hands-on technique that involves applying gentle sustained pressure into the Myofascial connective tissue restrictions to eliminate pain and restore motion. This is a safe and gentle technique with skin on skin contact without the use of any oils or creams.

Trauma, inflammatory responses, or surgical procedures create fascial restrictions that can produce tensile pressures of up to 2,000 pounds per square inch on pain sensitive structures and can cause malalignment, pain and can lead to structural changes.

Myofascial Release technique allows individualized treatment in  one-on-one therapy sessions that are hands-on using Myofascial Release techniques and movement therapy. The treatment allowed for independence through education in proper body mechanics and movement, self treatment and home exercise programs, improved flexibility, and body  awareness.
